PHOENIX — A little over a month after the downtown Phoenix YMCA announced it would close, the Phoenix Suns, the Phoenix Mercury and the Valley of the Sun YMCA have unveiled a $60 million plan to rebuild on the site.
The new three-story, 55,000-square-foot YMCA is slated to open in 2029, KJZZ reported. Plans call for three basketball courts, including one NBA-size court, along with health and wellness programs and education and workforce development space.
The project also includes plans for 60 affordable housing units above the facility.
“This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the YMCA and our commitment to downtown Phoenix,” Valley of the Sun YMCA President and CEO Bryan Madden said in a Monday news release.
In September, a YMCA spokesperson said the downtown branch was closing because the aging building needed significant repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
