No. 3 Utah picks off BYU four times, stays perfect atop the Big 12

Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — Devon Dampier accounted for four touchdowns, Utah intercepted four Bear Bachmeier passes, and the third-ranked Utes stayed undefeated with a 28-20 win over No. 7 BYU on Saturday, according to The Associated Press.

Dampier threw two touchdown passes to Braden Pegan and ran for two more scores, finishing with 264 yards of offense. Utah (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) snapped a three-game losing streak in the Holy War rivalry.

BYU led 20-14 at halftime after recovering two fumbles in the second quarter. But Utah shut the Cougars out in the second half, taking the lead on Pegan’s 14-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter and adding Dampier’s 5-yard run with 12:03 left.

Bachmeier threw for 272 yards and ran for 59, but two of his interceptions came in the end zone in the fourth quarter, including one by Nate Ritchie in the final seconds.

BYU fell to 7-2 and 4-2 in the conference, with its College Football Playoff hopes taking a hit.

The result matters for Arizona’s Big 12 teams, too: Utah sits alone atop a league that includes Arizona State and the University of Arizona.
