SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The United Auto Workers is trying to reassert its political power in battleground Michigan, but its own members remain divided, according to The Associated Press.

UAW canvassers fanned out in Macomb County, where Trump won by nearly 14 points in 2024, to promote the union’s slate of Democratic candidates for the Nov. 3 midterms.

‘Even if this election goes fantastically, that’s not mission accomplished. That means we’re 1% of the way done,’ said JJ Jewell of the UAW’s Community Action Program executive committee.

Union households split between Trump and Kamala Harris in 2024. The union is also rebuilding trust after more than 10 officials pleaded guilty in a corruption investigation since 2017.

Retiree Walter Usakowski, who worked at Ford’s Sterling Axle Plant for more than 45 years, said he backs the union slate but is unsure how many ‘guys in the shop’ will.
