TUCSON — Tucson Unified School District has now named 10 of its 88 schools in recommendations to close or consolidate campuses next school year, Arizona Luminaria reported Friday.
The latest pair, announced Friday afternoon, would close Collier Elementary and merge it into Bloom Elementary on the northeast side near Bear Canyon and Tanque Verde roads. Collier had just under 100 students last year in a building meant for 375, according to state data cited by the outlet.
Earlier in the week, the district recommended merging Magee Middle School into Sabino High School on the far east side, Cragin Elementary into Blenman Elementary in central Tucson, Dunham Elementary into Marshall Elementary and Hudlow Elementary into Sewell Elementary, among others.
Many of the affected schools are well under capacity. Magee had about 267 students in a building with room for 965, and Cragin had about 180 students with space for roughly 600, Arizona Luminaria reported.
The recommendations are part of an effort to right-size Southern Arizona’s largest school district and still need approval from the TUSD Governing Board, which is expected to take them up in December.
