Woman, 76, Killed in Phoenix Bus-Stop Pileup; Teen Kicked Officer: Police

A city bus stop

PHOENIX — A 76-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when a speeding SUV set off a five-vehicle pileup behind a city bus, and the 18-year-old driver later kicked an officer in the face, Phoenix police said.

Jeffrey Daniel White, 18, was arrested and booked into jail on an aggravated assault charge, KTAR News reported, citing the Phoenix Police Department.

Police said White was driving a gray Volvo SUV at a high rate of speed around 9:10 p.m. when he slammed into the back of a white Dodge Ram pickup near 19th Avenue and Evans Drive. The collision triggered a chain reaction among five vehicles stopped behind a bus that was letting off passengers.

The crash pushed a car driven by Frances Horner, 76, off the road and into a small brick pony wall. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

White tried to run from the scene but was held by witnesses, police said. While being treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, he kicked an officer in the face, according to police. Authorities said he showed signs of impairment.

Three other drivers, men ages 33, 45 and 26, were not hurt.

The deadly crash came a day after an SUV hit a group of people waiting at a bus stop near 46th Street and Baseline Road, sending five people to hospitals, KTAR News reported.
