Foiled terror plot against Taylor Swift’s Vienna shows becomes documentary

Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria

VIENNA — The thwarted terror plot that wiped out three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna is getting the documentary treatment, Variety reported.

The film, working-titled “Taylor Swift Wien,” is being co-directed by Andreas Pichler and Veronika Kaserer. “Wien” is German for Vienna.

Three Eras Tour dates set for Aug. 8-10, 2024, at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium were canceled after authorities were warned of an attack plot. Austrian authorities stopped the plan, helped in part by a tip from U.S. intelligence, according to Variety. The shows had been expected to draw more than 200,000 fans.

Georg Tschurtschenthaler of Germany’s Beetz Brothers, which is co-producing with Austria’s Markand Media, told Variety the film will follow the intelligence services racing to stop the attack.

It will also follow three female fans who organized psychological support for other Swifties after the cancellations, and it will examine the main suspect, who was 19 at the time and had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State, according to Variety.

Tschurtschenthaler said Swift’s management has been told about the project. The documentary is set to air on German broadcaster ZDF in October 2027 before an international release.

Swift later called the cancellations “devastating” and said she was grateful to authorities because “we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
