SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A shooting and gunfight with officers left three people dead, including the suspect, and two sheriff’s deputies critically wounded Tuesday in eastern Washington, The Associated Press reported.
Deputies went to a home in Spokane County, which borders Idaho, around 2:30 p.m. after a woman told her neighbor that her brother had shot her, Sheriff John Nowels said at a news conference.
Authorities learned the suspect had an active felony warrant and that there might be other victims, according to the sheriff’s office.
“SWAT team members and deputies approached the house, attempted to breach the door and were met with gunfire,” Nowels said. Other deputies returned fire and pulled the wounded SWAT members to safety.
One person was found dead inside the home and another in the yard, the sheriff said. The suspect also died. None of their names had been released.
Nowels described both wounded deputies as young members of the SWAT team. They were taken to a hospital along with the woman, whose injuries were not life-threatening.
“It’s a very tragic day in Spokane County. A lot of families have been affected,” Nowels said. “Both of our deputies, fighting for their lives.”
Investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting.
