WASHINGTON — Six U.S. senators from both parties on Sunday called on the Trump administration to “immediately reverse course” on a plan to buy diesel fuel from Russia, the Associated Press reported.
President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had reached a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone for Russia to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, 500,000 more tons in November and larger amounts after that, as part of an effort to bring down fuel prices.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Curtis of Utah joined Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut in the statement.
“The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians,” they wrote, adding that the administration did not consult Congress or provide the justification required by law.
