SCOTTSDALE — Scottsdale police responded to 665 calls for service at short-term rental properties from January through August, and the city is stepping up enforcement against problem rentals, KTAR News reported.
From June through August, officers handled 238 calls at vacation rentals, 28% of them tied to nuisance issues. Officers have filed 460 charges at short-term rentals this year, including 359 related to non-compliance.
In one August case, officers stopped a vehicle leaving a rental after reports of people displaying firearms, recovered two rifles and two handguns and arrested four people on weapons charges, according to the report.
The effort brings together police, the city attorney, code enforcement and other departments. The city is also working with Airbnb and supporting state proposals that would give cities more authority over rentals.
“Most short-term rentals operate without significant problems,” Police Chief Joe LeDuc said, but the city will act against properties that cause repeated problems.
Scottsdale has 2,966 active short-term rental licenses. Residents can report concerns to STR@ScottsdaleAZ.gov or call the police non-emergency line at 480-312-5000.
