Russian strikes knock out power to more than 600,000 in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region

Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure left hundreds of thousands of people without power on Sunday, Ukrainian authorities said, according to CBS News and Agence France-Presse.

In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, “more than 600,000 residents of the region have been left without power,” power company DTEK said after a night attack damaged important energy facilities. DTEK said repairs were “complicated by repeated attacks.”

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a Russian drone hit a critical infrastructure facility, and nearly 250,000 customers lost power, said Mykola Baksheyev, mayor of the city of Zlatopil.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes caused “widespread power outages across the country,” and that 140 apartment buildings in the Zhytomyr region alone lost heat as temperatures hovered around freezing.

Zelenskyy also said the death toll from Monday’s strike on an aid distribution center in the village of Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region, has risen to 55, and that Russia attacked the village again with a drone on Sunday.

He has accused Russia of stepping up attacks ahead of trilateral talks with the United States and Russia next week. The latest strikes came a day after Ukraine’s energy ministry said a massive attack plunged five regions into darkness.
