Russia Posts Record 2026 Casualties as Ukraine Warns of Winter Energy War

KYIV — Russia suffered its heaviest monthly personnel losses of 2026 in September, Ukraine’s military said, even as Moscow escalates drone and missile attacks aimed at freezing Ukrainian cities this winter.

Ukrainian officials put September’s Russian killed-and-wounded toll at 46,230, after roughly 40,000 monthly casualties since June. They also claimed 2,090 Russian losses on Sept. 28 alone — the war’s highest single-day figure by Kyiv’s count. Independent verification remains limited; Ukraine says most casualties are documented on video from first-person-view drones.

On the ground near Lyman, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps says Operation Vivaldi’s latest phase reclaimed about 176 square kilometers by feinting west, then striking north with explosive-laden remote APCs. Outside trackers such as the Institute for the Study of War still show Russian net gains this year far smaller than Moscow’s battlefield claims.

Meanwhile Russia has pounded energy infrastructure almost daily since summer. Strikes hit a Kyiv-region thermal plant, science buildings and, according to Ukrainian advisers, experimental drones designed to sever high-voltage pylons. Interception rates against newer jet-powered Shahed-type drones have fallen sharply compared with propeller models.

Both sides are overspending defense budgets. Ukraine is seeking tens of billions more for early-2027 contracts; leaked Russian planning cited by Reuters points to another large defense hike for 2027. Zelenskyy continues to press partners for licensed Patriot interceptor production after an earlier U.S. offer was withdrawn.
