Phoenix Opens Nine Free Sand Sites Ahead of a Wet, Windy Weekend

Storm clouds gather over the Valley

PHOENIX — Phoenix opened nine free sand sites Friday so residents can fill sandbags before a stormy weekend.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday through Monday, and localized flooding is possible. Rain totals are hard to predict, but the Valley could get about half an inch. A Wind Advisory is in effect Sunday across most of Arizona, with south winds of 25 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.

The sand is free while it lasts, first come, first served. The city does not hand out bags or shovels, so bring your own. Locations: Paseo Highlands Park, 3435 W. Pinnacle Peak Road; Paradise Valley Park, 17642 N. 40th St.; Moon Valley Park, 502 W. Coral Gables Drive; Encanto Park Sports Complex, 2121 N. 15th Ave.; El Oso Park, 3451 N. 75th Ave.; Pecos Park, 17010 S. 48th St.; Trailside Point Park, 7215 W. Vineyard Road; Aguila Park, 7858 S. 35th Ave.; and Esteban Park, 3345 E. Roeser Road.

ADOT also has weekend closures on Loop 101, Loop 202 and I-10, and warned the schedules could change with the weather. Never drive into a flooded wash. Arizona’s Stupid Motorist Law can make drivers who need rescuing pay for it.
