PHOENIX — Phoenix leaders have adopted RIO PHX, a long-range plan for 20 miles of south Phoenix along the Rio Salado that lays out goals for housing, development, parks and public investment, ABC15 reported.
The plan singles out four catalyst sites where the city wants to encourage growth over the coming decades. A site at 7th Avenue is targeted for mixed-use development, while a city-owned property along Central Avenue is envisioned as a gateway into south Phoenix with businesses and community gathering space.
A third site at 16th Street could become a recreation area, and a fourth along 24th Street is also identified for mixed use.
The Rio Salado corridor follows the Salt River channel, where the city has spent years restoring habitat and building trails. The adopted plan is meant to steer future private investment and city projects rather than fund specific construction right away.
