New Garden Chinese Food, a Central Avenue Fixture for 80 Years, Set to Close Oct. 27

Central Avenue in Phoenix

PHOENIX — New Garden Chinese Food, which has served diners on South Central Avenue for about eight decades, plans to close after Oct. 27 unless someone buys it, ABC15 reported.

Co-owner Thomas Tang said the owners’ age and health mean they can no longer run the restaurant. “We are hoping for someone take over and keep the heritage alive,” he said.

Since the closure was announced, regulars have packed the dining room, with waits of more than an hour at peak times. One customer pointed to the big egg rolls and called the place iconic.

Jean Ong, whose parents bought the restaurant in 1985, said the moment is bittersweet. She hopes New Garden is remembered for the generations of families who knew the staff by name, not just for its food.
