TEMPE — An attorney for the family of hospitalized Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich says head coach Greg Powers replaced his phone after the workout that left Mayich on life support, KTAR News reported Friday.
Leonard Aragon told KTAR News 92.3 FM the phone could contain videos or communications between coaches that might clarify what happened Aug. 20, when Mayich collapsed during a military-style workout. Aragon flagged the potential loss of evidence in an Oct. 3 letter to ASU.
The family understands Powers had been receiving death threats, which led him to replace the device, according to Aragon. “We don’t condone (death threats). It shouldn’t happen, and it’s wrong,” Aragon said, while arguing the phone itself should have been preserved.
Powers was placed on paid administrative leave Sept. 30.
Aragon also criticized the scope of the university’s independent review led by former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales, saying it focuses on policies rather than what happened.
ASU and Powers had not publicly responded to the attorney’s latest claims in the KTAR report.
