SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to China on Saturday, crossing a newly opened bridge into the border city of Dandong and pledging to deepen cooperation with Beijing, CBS News reported.
It was Kim’s first trip to China in a year. In Dandong, he visited a memorial to China’s support for North Korea in the 1950-53 Korean War and met Wang Huning, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s top leadership body, who passed along greetings from President Xi Jinping, according to North Korean state media.
The two also toured a car factory. Kim said the bridge would fulfill its “historic mission” of linking the two countries.
Kim has been rebuilding ties with China, North Korea’s main economic lifeline, after years focused on Russia, where Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
