A federal judge in Brooklyn on Thursday threw out a Trump administration lawsuit that sought to block New York City laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes said the government could not challenge a city rule barring police from holding immigrants solely at federal request because that practice is already prohibited under state law, Reuters reported.
The ruling is a setback for the administration’s broader campaign against local “sanctuary” policies ahead of the midterms. City officials have argued their laws protect public safety by keeping immigrant communities willing to talk to local police.
Federal lawyers can appeal. Similar fights are pending in other jurisdictions as Washington presses cities and states to expand immigration cooperation.
