John Anderson, the Country Music Hall of Fame singer known for his unmistakable voice, has died at 71, his family announced Wednesday, CBS News reported.
“To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives,” the family wrote. “To us, he was so much more.”
Anderson moved to Nashville from Florida as a teenager, playing clubs and working construction jobs, including on the roof of the Grand Ole Opry. “Swingin'” became a No. 1 hit and the CMA Single of the Year in 1983, and “Straight Tequila Night” and “Seminole Wind” reached a new generation in the early 1990s.
A mysterious illness beginning in 2016 nearly took his hearing, but he returned with the 2020 album “Years” and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
