NFL Suspends 49ers Owner Jed York Six Games, Fines Him $500,000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six regular-season games and fined him $500,000 on Friday for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, closing the disciplinary chapter of his Ohio prostitution-sting arrest.

York pleaded no contest in August to misdemeanor charges stemming from an Aug. 23 arrest in East Palestine, Ohio, after authorities said he responded to an undercover online ad. He did not attend the Niners’ first three games of 2026; those absences count toward the six-game ban, so he may return Oct. 20 — the day after San Francisco faces Washington on Monday Night Football.

In a team statement, York said he accepts the NFL’s decision “in full,” apologized to his family, players, coaches, employees, fans and partners, and called the episode an “inexcusable mistake.” Coach Kyle Shanahan said the ruling finally gave the organization clarity after three weeks of operating without the owner at games.

York has been the franchise’s CEO since 2008 and majority owner since 2024. The discipline underscores how the league’s conduct standard reaches ownership suites — not only players — when criminal cases intersect with the NFL calendar.

The 49ers continue their season under Shanahan’s day-to-day leadership while York serves the balance of the suspension.
