WASHINGTON — A federal grand jury in Washington on Tuesday declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Details of prosecutors’ allegations were not immediately clear. Republican lawmakers had accused Hutchinson of lying under oath in her 2022 testimony to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Hutchinson, a former special assistant to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified about President Donald Trump’s actions that day. That included an account, which she said she heard secondhand, that Trump grabbed at the steering wheel of the presidential SUV. Trump denied much of her testimony.
In 2024, House Republicans released a transcript in which the Secret Service driver said Trump “never grabbed the steering wheel,” though the driver’s account backed other parts of her testimony, including Trump’s attempt to go to the Capitol, the AP reported.
The AP described the decision as the latest setback in the Justice Department’s efforts to charge people seen as adversaries of the president.
