PARIS — French police made 1,314 arrests during nationwide protests over the high cost of living and the education system, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said Sunday, CBS News reported.

About 410,000 people joined roughly 298 demonstrations, according to the Interior Ministry; the CGT labor union put turnout near 800,000. Nuñez said daytime marches went well but officers faced “an extremely elevated level of violence” from far-left groups later. Fifty-three officers were hurt.

Some shops were looted, but far fewer than the roughly 3,000 businesses damaged a week earlier. Authorities deployed up to 70,000 officers, conducted pre-march checks and seized weapons including fireworks, slingshots, steel balls and a katana.

In Paris, an authorized march was moved at the last minute from the Bastille to the Porte d’Italie, which union leaders called “scandalous.” Events tied to the NFL’s first game in France were canceled.
