PHOENIX — The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating suspicious letters sent to the Arizona offices of three Democratic members of Congress: Reps. Adelita Grijalva, Yassamin Ansari and Greg Stanton.
The lawmakers said the FBI’s Phoenix field office and the Arizona Department of Homeland Security notified them over the weekend. Letters to Grijalva and Ansari went to former office addresses, and the one addressed to Stanton’s Mesa office was intercepted before delivery.
Ansari told KTAR News that all three letters contained white powder, and that it was not yet known whether the substance was toxic. No injuries were reported.
“We will not be intimidated, and we’ll keep doing the work that Arizonans elected us to do,” the three said in a joint statement.
The letters come days after the Arizona Executive Tower was evacuated Oct. 15 when Secretary of State’s Office staff opened an envelope containing white powder; that substance was found not to be toxic. An FBI spokesperson said the agency is investigating a series of suspicious mailings nationwide to secretary of state, election and congressional offices and is working to identify whoever sent them.
