ESPN projects Zac Gallen for one-year $12M deal after rough season

Players meet on the mound

PHOENIX — Three Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers made ESPN’s list of the top 50 free agents, and analyst Kiley McDaniel projects Zac Gallen will have to settle for a one-year deal, according to Arizona Sports.

The D-backs finished 86-76 but missed the playoffs again, and their rotation and bullpen could look very different in 2027.

Starter Michael Soroka ranked 28th on McDaniel’s list. McDaniel wrote that Soroka still has the traits that made him a star at 21 in 2019, but injuries limited him to 22 combined appearances in 2025 and 2026. He suggested a one-year prove-it deal or a two-year contract.

Reliever Jonathan Loaisiga ranked 29th. The former Yankee had a 2.42 ERA in 67 innings in his first season with Arizona, and McDaniel projects about two years and $22 million.

Gallen ranked 44th after a career-worst 6.07 ERA and his lowest strikeout rate. McDaniel projects a one-year, $12 million deal, calling a change of scenery and a “pillow contract” his likely best move.

Other D-backs free agents include catcher James McCann and relievers Taylor Clarke and Kevin Ginkel, Arizona Sports reported.
