BENSON — An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper accused of sexually assaulting a crash victim he was sent to help now faces a second felony charge, according to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
Trooper Aiden Rosebeck, 35, responded to a hit-and-run call on Interstate 10 on Sunday night to help a female crash victim, according to detectives cited by AZFamily. Investigators say he sexually assaulted her instead.
Detectives determined the woman is a vulnerable adult because of a mental impairment, AZFamily reported. Deputies found her stranded and distraught on the side of I-10 near West Skyline Road, less than 10 miles west of Benson, the next morning after several people called 911.
After the arrest, sheriff’s detectives sent more evidence to the Cochise County Attorney’s Office, which added a charge of sexual assault involving a vulnerable adult, a Class 2 felony, ABC15 reported.
A judge kept Rosebeck’s bond at $10,000 on both charges. That required a 10% secured payment, meaning he paid $1,000 to be released.
“When such a low bond threshold is set with the actual secured payment of only $1000, this is a failure of the court,” Sheriff Mark Dannels said in a statement.
Susie Charbel, a part-time judge and former Maricopa County prosecutor, told AZFamily the bond seems low but is completely up to the court’s discretion.
Rosebeck has not been convicted, and the charges are allegations. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 520-432-9500.
