DoorDash is buying Instacart in a $17 billion deal that will supercharge its grocery delivery business, the Associated Press reported.

DoorDash said the Instacart brand and app will stay, Instacart shoppers can keep filling Instacart orders, and grocers can choose to work with either platform.

Instacart customers will gain access to 50,000 additional stores covered by DoorDash, the company said.

Founded in 2012, Instacart delivers from grocery and convenience stores in the U.S. and Canada. Its 600,000 shoppers, who are independent contractors, completed 338 million orders last year, according to company filings. Instacart has a market value of $14 billion.

Both services are widely used across metro Phoenix and Tucson.

The deal is expected to face regulatory review before it closes.
