WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors are investigating contracting at the Department of Homeland Security during the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term, including the conduct of longtime Trump ally Corey Lewandowski, two sources told ABC News.
Lewandowski served as a special government employee and effectively as chief of staff to former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Both were pushed out in March after a congressional hearing, as the department faced scrutiny over costly contracts.
The investigation is in its early stages and began with a referral from DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari, the sources said.
Lewandowski’s attorney, Adam Trigg, said his client has not been contacted by the Justice Department and “denies any wrongdoing.”
Asked about the probe Thursday, Trump said he didn’t know the specifics. “All I know is I want my people to be honest,” he said. “And if they’re not gonna be honest they have to be prosecuted.”
