NEW YORK — Customers withdrew $7.4 billion from Binance after the cryptocurrency exchange suffered what security experts call the largest digital coin theft ever, CBS News reported.

A Binance spokesperson said Monday that customers also deposited $2.7 billion after the company let people resume transactions Sunday, leaving a net outflow of $4.7 billion.

Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange with more than 300 million users, said the withdrawals represent just 3% of its $157 billion in total assets. “Withdrawal levels are stabilizing to what we would consider normal and expected on-chain activity,” the spokesperson said.

Hackers stole $6.3 billion in digital currency from the exchange. The FBI linked the attack to North Korea and said the group believed responsible, known as TraderTraitor, was converting most of the stolen money into Ethereum to hide its tracks.

About $3 billion of the stolen assets were frozen, according to Binance. The FBI said the same group was behind a February 2025 attack on the exchange Bybit that cost $1.5 billion.

The FBI urged private companies to block transactions linked to addresses the hackers are using.

Binance has promised to cover all customer losses with company funds and said it had covered about 95% by early Sunday.
