BEND, Ore. — Three children ages 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher were killed Thursday in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, police said.
The shooter, 16, was found dead inside the school when officers arrived, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said. A community member had pursued him into the building and shot him, Krantz said.
The first 911 call at 12:59 p.m. reported a shot fired into a car outside the school. More calls came from inside. Officers arrived within minutes; the attacker went down soon after, Communications Manager Sheila Miller said. Two people were taken to St. Charles Bend hospital; their conditions were not immediately known.
The Bend-La Pine district put the K-5 school, which enrolled about 459 students last year, under lockdown while police evacuated rooms. Miller called the scene devastating for the city more than 100 miles southeast of Portland.
