Jake Fette throws and catches TD as ASU smothers Colorado 20-10

Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe

TEMPE — Freshman quarterback Jake Fette threw a touchdown pass and caught another, and Arizona State’s defense dominated in a 20-10 win over Colorado on Saturday night.

According to AZFamily, Fette became the first ASU quarterback to both throw and catch a touchdown in the same game since Jake Plummer did it in 1996. Plummer and the 1996 Rose Bowl team were in the stadium for their 30th anniversary.

Fette’s touchdown catch came on fourth-and-goal from the 1, when fellow freshman Cardae Mack took a direct snap in the wildcat and threw to him. “I didn’t even know what to do. I’m just happy I caught it,” Fette said.

Later in the second quarter, Fette hit Reed Harris on a 34-yard touchdown pass for a 17-0 halftime lead. Harris finished with four catches for 103 yards, according to Arizona Sports.

Colorado managed just 21 total yards on its first four drives. Albert Smith III had three sacks, ASU had eight tackles for loss as a team, and linebacker Owen Long had 17 tackles.

“(Fette) did a good job controlling the game,” head coach Kenny Dillingham said. He added that his team needs to be “a little bit more aggressive on early downs” after building a lead.

The win moved ASU to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play with three games left. Colorado fell to 3-6 and 1-5.
