PHOENIX — Arizona is in for two days of strong storms after a powerful system damaged homes and cars in the East Valley on Tuesday night and prompted brief tornado warnings in northern Arizona early Wednesday.
In Mesa and Chandler, hail, wind and heavy rain uprooted trees. At the Talise Apartments near Gilbert Road and University Drive, a large branch fell onto a carport, bending it and damaging a vehicle underneath, AZFamily reported. Other residents woke up to trees on their cars.
Around 5 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Flagstaff issued tornado warnings for parts of Yavapai and Coconino counties, including Perkinsville, Bellemont, Parks, Fort Valley and the area around Humphreys Peak. Both warnings were based on radar-indicated rotation rather than a confirmed tornado, and both have expired.
A Flood Watch is in effect Wednesday and Thursday. Forecasters put Valley storm chances near 40% Wednesday morning, rising to about 60% by afternoon and overnight, with hail and damaging wind possible. The high country and the Valley both have a slight risk of severe storms, including tornadoes, through Thursday.
Never drive into flooded roads or washes, and keep a way to receive weather alerts on your phone.
