Arizona Appeals Court Lets Green Party Campaign-Fund Fraud Probe Move Ahead

PHOENIX — The Arizona Court of Appeals on or about Oct. 7 dismissed an attempt by two Green Party candidates to stop a fraud investigation into how they obtained public campaign funds.

Arizona Mirror reported the candidates were under scrutiny for allegedly obtaining millions in public matching money improperly and had sought to resist related subpoenas. The appeals court let the investigation proceed.

Arizona’s Clean Elections system gives qualifying candidates public funds in exchange for strict spending and reporting rules. Prosecutors and the Clean Elections Commission have pursued misuse cases in past cycles when paperwork or spending did not match the rules.

The ruling means investigators can keep seeking records ahead of the midterms, when smaller-party candidates often appear on statewide ballots alongside major-party races.
