Archdiocese of New York Agrees to $800 Million Settlement With About 1,300 Clergy Abuse Survivors

NEW YORK — The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay $800 million to settle claims from about 1,300 people who say they were sexually abused by clergy, the Associated Press reported.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks confirmed the agreement in an email to clergy Saturday after survivors’ attorneys announced it. He said it will not be final until it is signed, which is scheduled for the week of Nov. 6. The deal would end more than seven years of litigation.

Only the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to a larger abuse settlement in the U.S., at $880 million in 2024. San Francisco’s archdiocese agreed to $395 million in June, and New Orleans to at least $230 million in 2025.

Attorney Jeff Anderson, whose firm represents many of the claimants, called the agreement “a powerful moment in the pursuit of justice.” Most of the suits were filed under a 2019 New York law that opened a window for survivors of childhood abuse to sue. The archdiocese covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and seven counties to the north.
