NEW YORK — Six people were killed when fire tore through a two-story home in Brooklyn early Thursday, the New York City Fire Department said, according to the Associated Press.

Heavy fire was reported in the row frame building in the Sunset Park neighborhood at 1:40 a.m. More than 200 first responders went to the scene, and the fire was brought under control in about three hours.

Four people died at the scene. Two others were critically injured and later pronounced dead at a hospital, the department said.

Four more people had injuries that were not life-threatening, and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause. A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but officials said it was not known whether it was connected to the fire.

Fire officials nationwide have warned about fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes, scooters and other devices.
