PHOENIX — With the World Series over, one of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ biggest offseason questions is back: what to do with second baseman Ketel Marte, MLB.com reported.
General manager Mike Hazen listened to trade offers for Marte last winter but kept him when he did not get what he considered fair value.
Now Hazen says change is coming to a team that has missed the playoffs by a game or two each of the past three seasons. “I think we need to look at some ways to shake the team up a little bit,” Hazen said. “We’re going to find ways to make some changes in some cases. I don’t know where that’s going to take us.”
Any deal would be complicated. Marte is under contract through 2030 with a player option for 2031, and in April he gained 10-and-5 rights, which let him veto any trade.
Last August, Marte did not show up for a game at Fenway Park and was placed on the restricted list and later the injured list. It was not his first unexcused absence, MLB.com reported. He later met with Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo and apologized to his teammates.
A baseball source told MLB.com that other teams have asked whether Marte would be available.
The Diamondbacks are coming off a season in which three players, Gabriel Moreno, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo, won Gold Gloves.
