1 Dead, 8 Wounded in Shooting After Magic City Classic HBCU Game: Police

Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a shooting outside Legion Field after Saturday’s Magic City Classic, the nation’s largest historically Black college football game, police said.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Graymont Avenue around 7:50 p.m., where vendors were set up, and suspended all tailgating, WBRC reported via Arizona’s Family. Police Chief Michael Pickett said most fans had already left the stadium.

As of early Sunday, one victim was in critical condition and seven others were stable, police said. No officers or first responders were hurt.

Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person was detained and taken to headquarters for questioning, and that multiple weapons were recovered, The Associated Press reported via KTAR News.

Pickett called the shooting a “senseless act of violence” and said he was “very grateful that more people weren’t injured.”

“Our Birmingham police officers are true heroes,” he said, describing officers running toward the gunfire while checking on people they passed.
