PHOENIX — Forty-two percent of Arizona schools earned an A in the state’s newly released letter grades, while several schools tumbled from the top grade to a D or an F, ABC15 reported.

Charter schools outperformed district schools, with 49% of charters earning an A compared with 40% of district schools, according to ABC15’s analysis of the data. Among high schools, 56% of 230 earned an A, compared with 40% of K-8 schools and 44% of 131 hybrid schools.

More than half of schools earned an A in Greenlee, Apache and Maricopa counties, while 42% did in Pima County, the analysis found.

Some schools fell hard. Stepping Stones Academy dropped from an A to an F, and Phoenix International Academy went from an A to a D, ABC15 reported. Valley Union High School, Ray Middle School and Littleton Online Academy each slid from a B to a D.

Mesa Public Schools, the state’s largest district, said 33 of its schools earned an A, and for the first time all six of its comprehensive high schools received the top grade, ABC15 reported.

This is the final year of Arizona’s current grading system, according to ABC15. Families can look up individual school grades through the Arizona Department of Education.
