Maricopa County Recorder Hands Off Vote Centers, Keeps Signature Checks: Office Says

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office says its oversight of early voting sites ended Friday night, handing day-to-day operation of in-person voting to the county’s Elections Department for the final stretch before Election Day.

In a news release sent to media and the Thee Arizona Times tip inbox, the Recorder’s Office said its oversight of early voting locations concluded at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

The office said it will keep handling signature verification on returned early ballot envelopes, signature curing, which means contacting voters whose signatures do not match the ones on file, and the processing of provisional ballots.

According to the release, voters who use the “Stamp and Go” ID Verify option, which checks a voter’s identification in person when the ballot is dropped off, bypass the signature verification step.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ Elections Department now oversees emergency voting, Election Day vote centers, ballot drop boxes, poll workers, ID Verify tabulation and voting equipment, the office said.

The split reflects how election duties are divided in Arizona’s largest county: the elected Recorder runs voter registration and early ballot signature review, while the Board of Supervisors runs Election Day operations and counting.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voters with questions about signature curing can contact the Recorder’s Office, while questions about vote center locations and hours go to the county Elections Department. Media contact for the release was Judy Keane.
