Arizona Faith Leaders Urge Peace at the Polls, Respect for Election Workers

PHOENIX — Leaders from across Arizona’s religious communities are calling for peaceful participation in November’s midterms, the Arizona Mirror reported.

In a letter published Oct. 7, leaders including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arizona, the United Islamic Center of Arizona and the Greater Phoenix Board of Rabbis urged respect for election workers and spoke out against “dehumanizing rhetoric.”

“We reject every attempt to use religion to justify political violence, confer divine authority upon a candidate or party, or portray political opponents as enemies whose dignity no longer matters,” the leaders wrote.

The Rev. Katie Sexton, executive director of the Arizona Faith Network, which helped write the letter, said the goal was to show “unity in a very divided and partisan world.” She said it does not target any party. “We’re addressing behaviors and not addressing parties,” Sexton said.

Election Day is Nov. 3.
