MESA — A fast-growing Mesa congregation has bought a vacant Macy’s at Superstition Springs Center for $5 million, ABC15 reported.

Echoes Church, a nondenominational church that averages 3,200 worshipers on weekends, has been meeting in the auditorium at Desert Ridge High School.

The 154,000-square-foot store has been empty since early 2025 and will need extensive renovation, according to ABC15. Pastor Daniel Goulding said buying raw land would have cost at least $10 million. Plans call for keeping the store’s escalator.

“We really genuinely believe this is much more than a building,” Goulding told ABC15, adding the space will help the church be part of “the redemption and restoration of the East Valley.”

Former department stores across the country are being reused as churches, gyms, medical offices and entertainment venues as malls reinvent themselves.
