Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actress known for playing Barney Miller’s wife on the hit police sitcom, has died at 95, FOX 10 Phoenix reported, citing The New York Times.
Barrie died at her home in New York City after a terminal cancer diagnosis. Her daughter told the Times the death was medically assisted.
Barrie played the wife of Hal Linden’s title character on “Barney Miller,” which ran from 1975 to 1982, and later played Brooke Shields’ grandmother on “Suddenly Susan.”
She earned an Academy Award nomination for the 1979 film “Breaking Away,” losing to Meryl Streep for “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival for 1964’s “One Potato, Two Potato.” She also played Goldie Hawn’s mother in 1980’s “Private Benjamin.”
On Broadway, Barrie was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the original 1970 cast of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”
Her career stretched from the 1950s until last year, according to the report.
