ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays were down to their final inning of the season and came back anyway, beating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings Tuesday night to force a Game 5 in the World Series, The Associated Press reported.
Cooper Pratt’s tiebreaking home run off Ian Seymour in the top of the 12th put Milwaukee three outs from a sweep and its first championship.
The Rays’ rally began when third baseman Joey Ortiz made a throwing error on Junior Caminero’s leadoff grounder. Liam Hicks singled, and Jonny DeLuca’s single to center scored pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to tie it 3-3.
After Chandler Simpson’s single loaded the bases, Milwaukee went to a five-man infield. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson, who had been 1 for 15 in the postseason, chopped a single over first baseman Jake Bauers into right field to win it.
Tampa Bay is just the fifth of 26 teams to fall behind 3-0 in a World Series and win Game 4, according to the AP. The previous four all lost Game 5.
The only team ever to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven MLB postseason series is the 2004 Boston Red Sox, against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.
