University of Arizona Suspends All Fraternity Activities Amid Wave of Misconduct Reports

TUCSON — The University of Arizona has halted activities at its fraternities after a stream of misconduct reports involving assault, hazing, and drug and alcohol use, The Associated Press reported via KTAR News.

In a letter to fraternities and sororities on Monday, Oct. 5, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman said her office is investigating reports involving nearly half of the Interfraternity Council chapters just seven weeks into the fall semester, on top of misconduct findings last spring and several criminal investigations. “The number of cases under investigation and the severity of the concerns is egregious,” she wrote.

Under the suspension, fraternities may not host, attend, sponsor or take part in organizational activities at least until their advisers meet with Lieberman at one of three sessions scheduled this week and on Oct. 12.

The letter said the dean’s office had reached its capacity to investigate and that reports kept coming even after the university president warned chapter presidents in August. A university spokesperson did not say whether national scrutiny of Cornell University’s handling of a fraternity assault case played a role.
