CHANDLER — Chandler is in the early design stage of a project to widen Kyrene Road from four lanes to six between Loop 202 and Chandler Boulevard, ABC15 reported.
“Having it only be two lanes in each direction is insufficient for the traffic volumes that we are seeing,” said Jason Crampton, the city’s transportation planning manager. Instead of on-street bike lanes, the city is considering a 10-foot shared path for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides of the road.
Neighbors in the Sorrento community want a voice in the design. HOA President Belinda Russell said residents don’t want to block progress but want to make sure it brings positive changes for their neighborhood.
The first public meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sunset Library, 4930 W. Ray Road. Another meeting is planned for 2027. The city must acquire right-of-way, including landscaped areas along the road, before construction can begin in 2028.
