Cactus Shadows Athletic Director’s Handling of Gun-on-Campus Report Sent to Prosecutors

Cave Creek, Arizona

CAVE CREEK — Scottsdale police have asked city prosecutors to review possible criminal charges against the athletic director at Cactus Shadows High School over how a report of a gun on campus was handled, Cave Creek Unified School District Superintendent Nicole Regan said, according to Arizona’s Family.

In a joint statement with police, the district said investigators found that staff who received the report “did not follow the standard response protocol” of securing the school or reporting the possible crime to authorities. The case centers on an allegation that a student brought a firearm onto campus. The district’s statement also said the person was not enrolled in the district.

The submission to the Scottsdale City Prosecutor’s Office concerns an alleged failure to report and does not mean charges have been filed, the statement said. The employee has not been publicly named.

Regan said there is no current threat to students or staff and that the district is cooperating with police. The district had planned to give its next update Oct. 30.
