BEND, Ore. — The man credited with stopping a gunman at a Bend, Oregon, elementary school last week has spoken publicly for the first time, telling Oregon Public Broadcasting he was passing by only because he decided to go home for lunch, CBS News reported.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary, said he saw a man in black firing a long gun at a vehicle, then throwing the weapon over the school fence and climbing after it.
Giamanco said he took a seldom-used .40-caliber handgun from his truck, told his phone to call 911 and then hung up so he could follow the gunman. He described hearing shots and children pleading as he crawled closer.
Giamanco fatally shot the gunman and has been praised as a hero. He told the station he is still struggling with the aftermath.
