PHOENIX — A six-month federal crackdown on violent crime in Indian Country led to new charges in five Arizona cases, the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday.
Four of the cases are on the Navajo Nation: two violent assaults, an arson and the aggravated sexual abuse of a child younger than 12. A fifth person was charged in an assault on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, AZFamily reported.
Operation Not Forgotten, now in its fourth year, ran from April 1 through Sept. 30 nationwide. The Justice Department said arrests rose 123% and the number of people charged rose 52% compared with last year.
“Operation Not Forgotten sends a loud and clear message that our long-forgotten partners in Indian Country are forgotten no more,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.
