LOS ANGELES — Taylor Swift spent Saturday pointing fans toward a longer cut of “Patient Zero.” She shared the expanded video on Instagram Stories, linking to an Apple Music package that pairs the song, the original video, and an eight-minute behind-the-scenes version.
Swift directed the clip, which premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. Dakota Johnson plays a woman whose health fails while she is married to Colin Farrell’s character. Swift appears as the ghost of his former wife, warning Johnson and filling in a past the husband would rather keep buried. Swift describes the look as a sleek, monochromatic film that starts confusing and turns into a ghost story crossed with true crime.
The expanded cut shows Swift directing, Johnson talking about working with a friend without damaging the friendship, and the two of them rehearsing an underwater scene in matching black swimsuits in a pool above Los Angeles. Farrell calls his character an ambitious narcissist. Swift also praises cinematographer Emmanuel “El Chivo” Lubezki. Farrell says the joy she takes in the work is moving to watch.
“Patient Zero” is one of four songs Swift put out this week around The Life of a Showgirl. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore also includes “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon.” The expanded video is the piece built for people who already know the plot and want the set instead.
