Phoenix Police Search for SUV Driver Who Shot a Man Near 27th and Indian School

PHOENIX — Phoenix police are searching for a driver who fired at a man near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road just after midnight Saturday, leaving the victim with a gunshot wound to his hand.

Officers found the injured man at the scene, Arizona’s Family reported, citing police. Investigators said the suspect was in an SUV, fired at the victim, and drove off. The man was taken to a hospital. Detectives have not released a name, a description beyond the SUV, or a motive.

The shooting is one of three separate gun cases Phoenix officers worked between Friday night and early Saturday. Near 39th and Grand avenues, police arrested 47-year-old Spencer Vidal after a man was killed in a business parking lot. After midnight, a driver was found fatally shot inside a crashed vehicle near 19th and Maryland avenues, and a suspect was taken into custody at a nearby apartment. Police have not connected the Indian School shooting to either homicide.

What sets this call apart is that the shooter is still being sought. In the two fatal cases, investigators said they had someone in custody by Saturday. Here, the public description is limited to a person who fired from an SUV and left. A hand wound is serious, but the victim was alive when crews transported him. Police did not say Saturday whether his condition had changed.

Detectives asked anyone with information to call Phoenix police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS, or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish-language tips. Video from businesses along Indian School, or from drivers who were on 27th Avenue around midnight, is the kind of evidence that usually narrows an SUV description into a plate.

The corridor where 27th Avenue meets Indian School is a busy commercial stretch even late at night. A fleeing vehicle can be on the freeway in minutes. That is why plate-reader hits have mattered in other Valley cases this weekend, and why detectives are asking witnesses to call before camera footage is overwritten.
