Tony Romo and CBS Sports Mutually Part Ways After OWI Case

NEW YORK — CBS Sports and analyst Tony Romo said Friday they have mutually agreed to part ways, ending Romo’s run as the network’s lead NFL color commentator after a summer OWI arrest in Wisconsin and a subsequent no-contest plea.

Romo joined CBS’s top booth in 2017 and became one of the most recognizable voices in football television. The network said J.J. Watt will remain on the lead broadcast team with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Romo was arrested July 23 in Wisconsin on an operating-while-intoxicated charge and later pleaded no contest, issuing a public apology. In a statement tied to Friday’s announcement, he said he would take time to focus on his health and family before deciding on his next professional step.

The split closes a high-profile chapter for a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback whose predictive, chalkboard-style commentary helped redefine the modern NFL analyst role. Networks and agencies will now watch whether Romo returns to a booth, sideline role or sits out the rest of the season entirely.

CBS did not announce a permanent replacement beyond Watt’s continued presence on the A-team this fall.
