President Joe Biden Stands for Reproductive Freedom in Face of Supreme Court Decision – June 13, 2024

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Supreme Court Decision in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine – June 13, 2024

Today’s ruling underscores that our commitment to reproductive freedom remains unwavering. While the Supreme Court’s decision two years ago overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away a cornerstone of women’s rights, our fight persists. Many states now jeopardize women’s access to essential treatments, making it increasingly difficult for them to receive the care they need.

Despite these challenges, mifepristone, a critical medication for abortion, remains FDA-approved and accessible. This medication, deemed safe and effective over two decades ago, continues to be available to women.

However, it is crucial to recognize that attacks on medication abortion are part of a broader, extreme agenda by Republican officials to outlaw abortion nationwide. In the aftermath of Roe v. Wade’s reversal, 21 states have enacted severe abortion bans, some without exceptions for rape or incest. Women are being denied emergency care and forced to pursue legal battles or travel great distances for treatment. Healthcare providers face threats of imprisonment for fulfilling their professional duties, while even contraception and IVF are under threat.

The stakes are dire for women across America. Vice President Harris and I stand resolutely with the overwhelming majority of Americans who support a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions. We will persist in our efforts to ensure that every woman in every state receives the necessary healthcare, and we call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade through federal legislation — this is our unwavering commitment.
